| THE
OASIS IN THE CENTRE
The
Oasis in the Centre was a 150th Anniversary/Millennium gift to
the future. During the Year 2000 residents of the
Township of Wilmot celebrated the achievements of their
forebearers. At the same time, the future of the
Township of Wilmot as we knew it, was uncertain. The
Oasis, a small park located on the site of the first Wilmot
Township Hall, is a unique, permanent monument to our cultural
and natural heritage.
The
Oasis in the Centre is located on a .5ac site at Wilmot Centre
on the southeast corner of the intersection of Bleams Road and
Wilmot Centre Road.
The
focal point of the Oasis is a low stone sitting wall
representing the foundation of the original 1850 Township Hall
- built to scale using stones contributed by Wilmot families.
A concrete map of the Township showing the location of early
settlements is set on the ground inside the walls.
A
backdrop of trees, shrubs and flowers native to the area helps
to create the perfect setting for future generations of school
children, residents and visitors to learn about our past and
to appreciate the beauty of the productive farmland
surrounding the site.
Renowned
sculptor Ruth Abernathy, a Wilmot resident and member of the
Oasis Committee, designed a statue cast in bronze which
completes the scene. A pair of children holding hands,
jumping excitedly into the future reminds of us our leaps into
the new millennium and the future.
Lands
for the Oasis in the Centre were generously donated to the
project by Stephen and Lisa Yantzi and their family.
The
Oasis in the Centre was funded by federal and provincial
grants available exclusively for millennium projects;
corporate and individual donations; Wilmot Township; and
fundraising events. Many local business people and
professionals contributed their expertise and the services
towards completion of the project and all are permanently
recognized at the site.
The
Official Opening of the Oasis was Sunday October 1, 2000 |
